Hemangioma

Hemangiomas are benign tumors caused by clusters of extra blood vessels in the skin. Strawberry hemangiomas are raised, bright red, and located on the skin’s surface (superficial). These are most common in infants, often developing within the first few weeks of life and growing rapidly during the first few months. After the growth phase, they typically begin to shrink over time. Cavernous, or deep hemangiomas, develop beneath the skin and may appear as a bluish or purple lump. Mixed hemangiomas combine features of both types.

In most cases, hemangiomas do not require treatment and will begin to shrink and fade on their own. While many resolve significantly by early childhood, it can take 5 to 10 years to fully disappear. The main concern is location, and evaluation is especially important if the hemangioma interferes with vision, breathing, or other vital functions.

Treatment Options: Monitoring, oral or topical medications when necessary.

Our experienced providers carefully evaluate each hemangioma and recommend the most appropriate approach based on its size, location, and potential impact on health and development.
