Xerosis (Dry Skin)
Dry skin is an extremely frequent problem. It can range from a minor nuisance to wide-spread severe dry skin causing
significant itching. A common genetic cause of dry skin is called ichthyosis. A unique form of thickened dry skin can be seen on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet and is called keratoderma. The skin can become so thick and hard that is will get deep cracks that can be painful and bleed.
Treatment: gentle cleansers, moisturizing creams, ointments (petroleum jelly), and oils (coconut, shea nut butter) – most of these can be found over-the-counter but there are also prescription creams for severe cases
