Xerosis (Dry Skin)

Xerosis, or dry skin, is an extremely common skin condition that occurs when the skin lacks adequate moisture. Dry skin may affect small areas or become widespread, especially during colder months, with aging, or from frequent handwashing, harsh soaps, and certain medical conditions. Effects can range from mild nuisance to severe dryness that causes significant itching, flaking, scaling, or discomfort.

Some forms of xerosis are genetic. One common inherited condition is called ichthyosis, which causes persistent scaling and roughness of the skin. Another condition, keratoderma, affects the palms of the hands and soles of the feet, leading to thickened, hardened skin that can crack deeply, become painful, and sometimes bleed.

Dry skin requires proper care to restore moisture, protect the skin barrier, and reduce irritation.

Treatment Options: Gentle cleansers, moisturizing creams, ointments such as petroleum jelly, oils including coconut or shea butter, and prescription creams for more severe cases.

Our team will carefully evaluate the severity and underlying cause of your xerosis and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan to help relieve dryness, reduce discomfort, and improve overall skin health.
