Shingles Viral Infections

Shingles (herpes zoster) – Shingles can be a very painful rash occurring in middle-age and older adults. It is a reactivation of the virus that causes chicken pox (varicella zoster virus). Initially people often experience skin burning and pain on one side of their body or face which precedes the red rash with blisters. Shingles are generally only on one side of the body and follow the pattern of the affected nerve. Common areas to see shingles are one side of the chest and/or flank or one side of the face and scalp. Vaccines that minimize or prevent shingles outbreak are available for adults 50 years of age and older (Shingrix). An unwanted complication of shingles is called post herpetic neuralgia (PHN). This is characterized by continued burning and stinging pain in the location of the rash for weeks and months after the rash is resolved.

Treatment: creams (prescription) and antiviral medication
